Greetings to our past graduates. There is a chance that I taught English to some of you. I have taught at Suzuka University since April, 1994, 32 years ago. Over the years I have met so many incredible students. I often wonder what sort of lives our graduates have built.
Over the years there have been many changes at the Suzuka university. For example, technology is a much bigger part of education today. In the early years, we used the blackboard and chalk, textbooks, paper and pen, and occasionally, I would show a movie on a large television. Students did most of their research in the library with books. Today, most teachers still use textbooks and write notes on the board, but lectures also include PowerPoint presentations. Students also make their own PowerPoint presentations and take notes on their laptops. In addition, most research is done on the internet. Over the last 5 years, AI has also become a frequently used tool. Surely, the increased use of technology will continue at a rapid pace and Suzuka University will continue to adapt.
On the other hand, some aspects of a university never change. Most important, I have noticed that students today are the same as students when I first started teaching. Some are shy and some are very sociable, and everybody has different talents, but everybody wants to do their best and find a good job after graduation. Therefore, as a teacher, my job has also remained fundamentally the same. All of the teachers and staff at Suzuka University try to encourage students and help them with their specific needs.
As a teacher at a university, my work also includes research. I have been very lucky over the years to have had the time to study and write about the history of Nikkei history in Canada. In particular, I have worked with several people on a very unique part of Canada’s literary history; haiku that were written by Nikkei citizens of Canada, especially during the 1940s. It has opened my eyes to a completely different kind of Canadian history. It has also helped me to understand how immigrants contribute to the culture of their new homelands. I hope to continue doing this research with the support of Suzuka University.

Finally, I would like to offer salutations to all of our graduates. I hope that when you left Suzuka University that you were able to find a good path to carry you into the future. I know it has probably not been easy. Technological, economic and social changes have been so rapid over the last 32 years. It has not been easy to keep up. Perhaps the best advice I can offer is that we must all keep learning, not just while in university, but also when we become members of society. I am sure that with your energy, intelligence and creativity, you have done well. If you ever have time to visit Suzuka University again, please tell us about your accomplishments. We would love to see you again.
